The publication
of J Vasc Br in both Portuguese and English is no longer a project -
it has become an unquestionable reality in the shape of a high-quality
publication, which is well-respected by all the communities it serves
as a source of knowledge and up to date information, and as a means
of conveying scientific information and the message of sponsors. Since
June 2002, the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SBACV)
has relied on the Jornal Vascular Brasileiro/Brazilian Vascular Journal,
which has grown steadily in terms of the number and quality of the papers
it publishes. The fact that the journal regularly reaches its readers
is a known fact that benefits all its publics, including SBACV members,
the editorial board, medical schools, residency programs, several other
institutions, and advertisers.
Despite
the efforts of the previous SBACV Board, J Vasc Br is currently operating
with a deficit of R$ 30,000, as of the last issue published in 2003.
Of course this is in part the result of the Journal being a new product,
which requires time to mature and acquire the necessary credibility.
The firm
position of the previous SBACV Board on considering J Vasc Br as a top
priority was readily adopted by the current Board. Thus, we, the current
Board members, asked ourselves a question: How can we make J Vasc Br
become self-sufficient? To tackle this challenge, we established the
following goals:
1) To maintain
regularity as well as the quality and number of papers.
2) To increase
coverage. In all possible situations, we strive to publicize and stimulate
the submission of papers (SBACV bulletin, website, conferences and other
events, meetings, etc.), in addition to having increased our distribution
list and to having updated our mailing list.
3) To directly
involve the SBACV Board in the search for sponsors. Slowly but surely,
sponsors have been responding to our appeal.
A good
example is the publication of J Vasc Br. 2004;3(1). Sending this issue
to press strictly by the deadline would mean printing it with a deficit
of more than R$ 12,000. The SBACV Board then decided to make one more
contact with companies that had not shown interest in publishing their
advertisement in this issue. Following our contact, this position was
reconsidered, and we were able to cover printing costs and publish the
issue with a delay of only 8 days.
All the
Portuguese issues in 2004, as well as the English issue, were self-sufficient
thanks to the hard work of the SBACV Board, to the large number of SBACV
members and to the sensibility of our sponsors - who realize that they
are investing in a high-quality product.
It is my
conviction that J Vasc Br must be - and can be - self-sufficient!
More
about our journal
Recently,
in keeping with the projects of the Scientific SBAVC Committee concerning
Fora and Guidelines, the SBACV Board signed an agreement that will enable
the publication and distribution of 20,000 copies of a special J Vasc
Br supplement dedicated to Clinical Orientation Standards or DAOP Guidelines.
We are also working on the final details to secure sponsorship from
a different company to publish 10,000 copies of a supplement on Deep
Venous Thrombosis - Clinical Orientation Standards or Guidelines (revised
and updated), to be distributed to SBACV members and to members of other
related societies.
About
our website - information and research
Our website
offers up to date information to SBACV members and the general public.
A section restricted to members, the Vascular Net, provides access to
the full-text of five high-quality international publications referring
to the past 8 years, in addition to two hundred journals whose abstracts
can be searched. Access has increased from 40 to 300 daily visits, an
unquestionable sign that our community is looking for information, which
exactly fulfills our expectations for this kind of service.
The availability
of the Vascular Net is guaranteed at least until January 2006.
On the
eve of yet another examination in which 280 candidates will try to secure
the title of specialist in Angiology, Vascular Surgery, with emphasis
on Angiology and Radiology and Endovascular Surgery, we believe that
the success of this initiative provides additional evidence that the
work of the SBACV stimulates the interest for retraining, renovation
and qualification.
To all
our current and future contributors, thank you very much for your present
and future participation in this project, which is so meaningful to
our community. Submit your papers - we must fulfill our indexing goals,
and the regular publication of the journal will help us achieve that
faster.
